@selina:
“Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” John 4:48
Yup.

...

Still waiting.

...

I mean, he personally showed up to make sure Thomas knew he'd died and risen again. It seems such a small thing to ask him to do the same for me.

Hell, my soul and my eternal salvation are on the line here. Can't a just and loving god spare me one direct message? An appropiately impressive voicemail (left in the voice of the Metatron, naturally) would do the trick.

Clearly the Lord wants me to remain an atheist for His purposes. Who am I to deny my creator?

Nathan:
My minimal "problem" with Christianity is that its objective claims are false (in my informed and long-considered opinion, and speaking as an ex-Christian). Ditto all the other religions. Now that by itself doesn't bother me much, as mere disagreement with someone shouldn't be a cause of acrimony.

I have *additional* problems with the people who want to impose Christian rules on the rest of us -- and I can't be live-and-let-live about that, because of course the other side aren't willing to do that.

I do appreciate -- in both senses -- the fact that there are voices within the churches (even the theologically conservative ones) opposing these quasi-theocratic tendencies.

@selina: So Ray Comfort is going to prove god's exsistence is he? Well I'm not normally one to say the source of a statement makes it false but in Ray Comfort's case I'm prepared to make an exception.

Oh and the Bible is god as the Bible says it is - do you see a flaw in your argument anywhere perhaps?

Frankly, I find Buddha far more interesting than Jesus. At least his teachings are more consistent than Jesus's, and his followers just a touch less rabid.

"If you believe that Christians cannot base their facts without the bible….well helloooo..we use the bible because it is God:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1"

If you can't see the epic failure of rationality in using a book's claims of legitimacy to establish the legitimacy of that book, then you are beyond any reasonable discourse.

I've debated many evangelists on the topic of god and atheism. The next one that presents me with even one piece of actual evidence for their faith will be the very first one.

But thanks for playing.

i do agree that many churches have become corrupt...but this is way of life is also shown in the Old testament..and this is clearly angers GOD because he completed demolished everything in that city...this corruption is not God's fault...it's the people who have used "religion" for their own selfish needs
in the bible, God talks to us about people who twist God's word

"They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by
men.'" Matthew 15:9

"Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk." Col. 2:8

"But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves." 2 Peter 2:1

believing in God does not require you to be a certain religion...it's having the faith that God is real
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1

The truth is, God knew this would happen. He knew people would deny that he is real....its happend before:
"If you are the Christ," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me" Luke 22:67

"Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." John 4:48

If you believe that Christians cannot base their facts without the bible....well helloooo..we use the bible because it is God:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

"Most people who have a problem with the Church have a problem with it because of Christian protesters and street preachers. I find very few people who have a problem with Jesus."

While I dislike the medieval thinking of most evangelical christians, my real problem with christianity is the complete lack of evidence that any of it is true.

If I just want an itinerant philosopher, I can think of quite a number I like better than Jesus, and some of them even wrote down their own thoughts rather than having other people write them down fifty years later.

@Nathan: My problem with Christianity is there is no evidence for any of the supernatural claims. As for Jesus, I have no idea what he really said (he didn't write anything and everything else is what other people claimed he said), so I don't know whether he was a great guy or not.

That's what it comes down to for me. The silly, angry, hypocritical masses are just fun to make fun of.

Hey Daniel,

I'm an evangelical Christian that isn't mad at everyone like some of the fundamentalists in our midst. I enjoy reading your blog...in fact, I think you might get a kick out of this post. I just wanted you to know that there are those of us Christians who think and learn and, though we don't have an answer for everything, we're actually pretty civilized and interesting. I would love for you to check out some of my thoughts at churchethos.wordpress.com. It's not necessarily a blog to refute (and certainly not to attack) atheism, but my whole point is that the Church has developed some bad habits and I want to be a part of the solution to the problem. The problem is that there are a lot of Christians who don't think they just swallow whatever their pastor tells them.

My blog is by a Christian to other Christians encourage them to follow Jesus and to think Christianly. Most people who have a problem with the Church have a problem with it because of Christian protesters and street preachers. I find very few people who have a problem with Jesus. We've all made mistakes but the more we can learn from and live like Jesus, the better. I hope you will participate in discussions on my blog because I think your input would be valuable. I will try and do the same here on your blog if you will permit me.
