Oh my -

# Insert appropriate variable below

$system{diety:belief:disbelief:cat:dog:whatever}

That is humorous. Sad to see that the people who do come knocking on weekends don't understand that you cannot claim a right from me if you aren't willing to allow others to claim the same right from you.

That is the fundamental problem Chris. You can't say it's okay for your $group{religion:belief:sect:cult:whatever} to cold call people at their homes, but not $whatever to have the same right.

The differences are not there between $GroupA and $GroupB if they both cold call without warning at people's homes. There is this place where profession of one's beliefs is perfectly acceptable and not annoying:

$GroupMeetingLocation

There is another place where it is considered rude, crude and an imposition:

$home

I left the variables for you to figure out. No variables, belief systems or lack thereof were harmed in the making of this

#comment

Nor would I ever propose $harm to any $group.

Have a nice $timeperiod{day:night:morning:afternoon}

You might be a fundamentalist if... you call people "Darwinians."

Personally, I think the Newtonians contribute to the demise of our society — they should be wiped off the face of the earth!

I didn't say anything about persecution. I do think its very dangerous to start lumping groups together and stereotyping people or cities. I don't live in Salt Lake but I know that less than half of the people there are Mormon, (maybe even less than that now). Jehovas Witnesses and Mormons are significantly different by the way.

My point was simply that if the guy in the video was annoyed by the missionaries, he only proved that he could be just as annoying, and he did it with a much more spiteful attitude than your average Mormon missionary who goes door to door. In my opinion, the intent with which the message is brought to the door can have just as much impact as the content of the message, regardless if its a Mormon, an atheist, or whoever.

If a pair of atheists showed up at my door and really wanted to talk with me in a civil manner I would be totally up for it. We both might learn something. I'm sure there are many Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons, Catholics, Muslims, Budhists, agnostics, Darwinians, etc. who would have the same response as me.

Obviously there's alot of people generally (of every belief system) who simply refuse to speak to anyone at their door about anything. So to edit to together a handful of responses from people this guy thinks are Mormon because they live in Salt Lake City, its very disingenuous, and again, doesn't really prove anything about Mormons or any other belief system. It just shows that you when approach someone's belief system in a purposefully threatening way (which includes atheists), they'll almost always react defensively. That's human nature, and if this is news to you then you maybe you should take some time going to door to door and see how people react to your personal message of whatever is sacred to you, depending on your motive, tone of voice, and how much you actually care about them as an individual.

@Michael:

I guess that's what he's saying. At least that's what a lot of other people have been saying. And it really bothers me.

I live in Sweden, supposedly one of the most atheistic countries in the world, and I still have people regularly knocking at my door, wanting me to accept someone as my personal something. And sure, I'm fine with that. It's their right.
It's mostly JWs, and usually they are pretty fun to talk with. I believe in none of the stuff that they talk about, so it gives me some insight in a world quite unlike mine. And I'm polite and civil with them when they come to talk. But a few months ago I had an experience with them that made that harder...

They came and gave me the latest copies of the Watchtower and Awaken! and as usual I read through some of it. And a large part of one of them (I don't remember which) was dedicated to "Why the man in is the head of the household"... Yep, that's right, they were coming to my door and giving me pamphlets about why women should shut up and obey us men, because they're women. Trying to teach a new generation of men to be misogynistic bastards, as if we hadn't seen enough of that in the past.

And this is seen as ok. People defend their right to do this. Hell, -I- defend their right to do this. I think they should be allowed to express their opinion, even though I would prefer it if they didn't come to my house and wake me up for it.

But when people start trying to bring out a message of free thought, science, and rationality, they are seen as "disrespectful" by many. Many claim that they shouldn't do that because they "attempt to tear down their beliefs".... But going around handing out misogynistic propaganda about women knowing their place - that's A-OK!

@Chris:
So, what you're saying is, it's okay for the Mormons, J.W's and other Christian groups to go door to door, disturbing people, but when someone does it to them, asking them legitimate questions, that's not ok? Let me guess???
That's persecution... Now that's a typical Christian response!

@Chris: Understanding FAIL.

In my town it's the JW's, mostly, although the Mormons have a presence too (I may have linked to this before).

The Mormons and JW's aren't even considerate enough to target anyone specifically. If they were, they might spare us atheists the bother of slamming our doors in the wee morning hours.

All that happened in this video was that someone, for a few hours, dished it out instead of having to sit and take it, for a change. And how odd it is that so many of them hadn't the Christian patience to hear them out!

Ok so you went to Salt Lake, assumed the appearance of Mormon missionaries (out of spite), specifically targeted Mormons (although how do you know the people you visited were even Mormon, besides the Bishop) and attempt to tear down their beliefs, and you act like its hypocritical that they don't welcome your spite with open arms?

Your diatribe may have been somewhat witty at times, but all the whole exercise really proved is that if there was any harm imposed on you by the Mormons knocking on your door, you're no better.
