I can’t believe this pastor actually sat down with Bruno. I give him credit for that. But it makes his ideas against homosexuality sound even more absurd than they usually do. Which is why I find this hilarious.

How weird, I just came across this video the other day randomly.
I can’t wait for the Bruno movie to come out. I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a genious at getting people to look rediculous, as well as making himself into a mold of what other people are often prejudiced against in order to do that.

Not all people who follow Jesus are quite so unthoughtful. In fact, the pastor’s apparent insistence that we socialize only with other Christians is simply uninformed. Paul, whom he quotes (Romans), also wrote 1 Corinthians, insisting that we need to eat with and rub elbows with people other than “Christians.” Jesus hung out with people that the religious bosses didn’t approve of at all. Who cares what the religious bosses think? Historically, they are almost always wrong. Heck, they even murdered their Messiah after he exposed their complete failure to provide any light for the world.

To be fair to him a lot of people that could be termed intelligent have been taken in Sacha Baron Cohen. Part of the ‘problem’ is that his characters are people belonging to groups that are minorities/discriminated against etc. and therefore in public people are very wary of criticising them. So however idiotic what they say is they have to resist the urge to shout “stop being such an idiot”. This in many ways it what makes it funny i.e. you can imagine what is going through the person’s mind but you also know that they have to ‘grin and bear it’as they are on TV.

To be honest, I don’t like him much anymore. He was much, much funnier as a ten minute sketch on The 11 O’Clock Show playing Ali G.
I don’t think that’s the case in this video though. Seriously, the pastor says that watching Will & Grace is “ungodly”. That’s the stupidest thing he says and that’s not even set up by Cohen. I should imagine even Cohen himself did not expect that answer.
No … no … no … just this sketch is far more representative of British attitudes with its balance between wanting to be tolerant but also being traditional at the same time.
I still find him funny but only in short doses. In addition now most of his material is US based I just don’t have the same connection with the people being interviewed/set-up.
In addition, there were quite a few people he interviewed back then who absolutely called him on his stupidity and offensiveness. Tony Benn and Prof. Heinz-Wolff come immediately to mind.
