Ummm… Meh.
I watched without audio and wasn’t too impressed. Did the soundtrack add something? It is a demo of fluids moving about on a highly water repellent surface that happens to be a leaf… what’s the big deal?
It’s not just any old hydrophobic surface. The Lotus effect is cool for a couple of reasons; it has much more to do with the microsturcture of the surface than the material it’s made out of (which makes it of great interest for a wide range of applications where the surface of a substance can be manipulated to create certain effects) and the particular way in which the Lotus effect causes hydrophobia also causes the surface to be partially self-cleaning. That’s a big deal, especially when it comes to trying to design small (as in micro-to-nano scale) machines and working surfaces.

We had these plants growing at my house as a kid, still at my grandmother’s now. They are a common ornamental plant in the U.S. (at least in the area I’m at) and we call them Elephant Ears. They do have a very strong water repellent quality though I never tried honey or anything sticky.
But…. what’s this got again to do with unreasonable faith? Something somesuch to do with creation versus evolution I’m sure….

Yep, when God appears to me with another witness to make sure I’m not delusional, I’ll gladly change my blog title. In the meantime, this falls under “science.”
Well: Sometimes “just neat things” get posted on the site.
And: They’re neat or even wondrous without christianity as an explanation.

There was an article about the potential benefits of this effect, recreated by nanotech or some sort of technology, in Scientific American a few months ago (last year?) Very cool stuff, but more amazing to see video. Thanks for posting this!
