I somehow missed this story a couple months ago, and I figure if I missed it, at least some others did.
Marwa Ali El-Sherbini moved to Germany in 2005. In Aug 2008, a man (Alex W.) shouted abuse at Marwa at a public playground, calling her a terrorist and a slut because she was wearing a head scarf. The police arrived and Alex was charged with defamation. During his trial Alex said that “people like her” were not real humans.
Later in an appeal court, Alex W. attacked Marwa and stabbed her at least 16 times. When her husband tried to protect her, the man stabbed the husband 16 times. There were no security personnel there, and when a policeman finally came, he misidentified the attacker and shot Marwa’s husband instead of Alex.
Marwa died at the scene and her husband was critically injured. Marwa was three months pregnant.
Some of the mourners didn’t help the problem with this, though:
“There is no god but God and the Germans are the enemies of God,” chanted the mourners, while others carried banners condemning racism.
It’s a sad tale of religious intolerance and racism. It didn’t get very much attention in the West, but it should have — this kind of behavior is despicable.

This story deserves much, much more publicity than it got (at least in the UK): it’s the most incredible tragedy.
I live in the UK and heard about this several times in the few days after it happened. A quick search finds 3 different BBC News articles talking about it. Anyone watching the news in Britain will have heard of it.
The BBC News is far far better at reporting Real News. Here in the US we’re lucky to get a 10 sec. blurb on a story like this. While we get Hours of Paris Hilton not wearing underpants. Truly sickening and sad.

What wasn’t been covered is that her parents were selling all their assets. Were they planning to murder their daughter and flee the country? I don’t think she was in any danger, but now the next ex-Muslim who really is threatened by family or community members for turning away from this religion has a little bit of that credibility taken away.

Honestly, do we know that Alex W. wasn’t an atheist? Nowhere in the story do I see any mention of his religion. It seems like German privacy laws are keeping the details under wraps.
It seems like his motivation was fanatical xenophobia, which may or may not have had a religious underpinning.

I think one thing that is interesting is that Alex W. himself is an immigrant to Germany. He is Russian. When you are Arab or South Asian, even if you are not Muslim yourself, hatred for Arabs, Turks, etc. is tied up with hatred for Muslims. It’s like people can’t separate the two. That was my experience, anyway, when faced with people’s hatred and ignorance.
This is so sickening to read about. Especially the stories of honor-killing. I mean, how could parents murder their own children? And over religion? It’s disgusting and extremely dishonorable for their entire culture.

What kind of punishment did this Alex receive? I hate to say “an eye for an eye,” but his actions are deserving of the death penalty, although I’m unsure of Germany’s stance on that.

Capital punishment is almost non-existant in Europe. Belarus is the only European country I know of that still has the death penalty. In fact I think the US is pretty unique in being a developed country with capital punishment.

Being a German citizen, I can answer this one: death penalty is forbidden in our constitution (the “Grundgesetz”, translates to something like “fundamental law”, since May 23rd, 1949.
Besides, arguing from a constitutional state’s stance, I’d say that the death penalty is the only sentence that cannot be reversed whatsoever… Thus, it is unconstitutional. But that’s just me.

It also show why racial profiling is a bad idea. The policeman when he had to react quickly responded according to his training (I assume, I don’t know that the german use racial profiling but its common enough to be likely and I know that police officers have to be trained in a way that allow them to act fast in an amergency) and assumed that if there is a white guy and a middle eastern the later must be the attacker.

Again, as a German citizen I can tell you folks out there that “racial profiling” is something that is certainly not used in the training of German policewomen/-men. Why?! Since we have a history of despicable “racial issues”.

What has bothered me (an ex-Muslim) about this story is that the Muslim reaction, even from liberal Muslims, is that all of the blame lies on the German society and government. Firstly, to address the point originally made, compare murder rates – the number of murders per capita in the US, where they practise capital punishment for murder, is much higher than Western European countries with similar cultures. I’m not saying capital punishment is the cause of that, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be working as a very effective deterrent.
Then to address the other completely irrelevant points you bring up: most people where I live (the UK) leave their properties to their children. Actually I tend to agree with the socialist position which is that everyone should have an equal opportunity rather than have children of rich parents receive large estates while the poor receive nothing. I don’t believe your parents’ property is your human right. I do think all people should be equal though.

Next, you can’t presume to tell me how I’d act in certain situations. Firstly, I certainly wouldn’t pray to god to forgive a rapist, you’re right. I don’t believe in god. However, since you mention it, a very good friend of mine was raped, and while I remain very angry at the perpetrator, I do not want him killed or abused. My primary hope is that he can be changed so that he would never want to do this to anyone else or, if that cannot be achieved, he should be stopped from doing so in other ways, e.g. incarceration. Murdering him seems entirely pointless.
