Just Another Conservative Politician Sex Scandal

When conservative politicians speak of “protecting the family,” have you ever wondered who “the family” needs protecting from? Because I’m thinking it’s probably from themselves.

A conservative California politician “who is the vice-chairman of the legislature’s commerce committee and a member of its ethics committee, is married with two children and is known as a staunch defender of conservative family values” got into trouble when he went on about his sexual exploits in front of a microphone he didn’t realize was on:

[You might want to] make sure your microphone is OFF before bragging about and giving disgustingly lewd details of your affair with a much younger woman who is also a lobbyist whose clients have business before your committee, and also laughing about the fact that you are simultaneously cheating on your wife and your mistress with yet another woman….

While waiting for a televised committee hearing to begin, Duvall began bragging to a colleague about his sexual conquests, apparently not knowing that the microphones go live about one minute before the start time. Not content with mentioning the fact he was having an affair, which would have caused problems enough, Duvall — who I am now officially christening “Open Mike” — launched into explicit details, many of which are too nasty to reprint here, and all of which were captured by his microphone. (Among them: tiny underwear, spankings, and the 19-year-age difference.

In addition to the adultery problem, Open Mike’s admissions might also raise an ethical issue because the lobbyist represents a client that (like many businesses) has interests in legislation before the Utilities and Commerce Committee, and has donated to Duvall’s campaign.

The fact that Duvall is actually a member of the ethics committee might also raise an ethical issue. Or maybe it’s just awkward.

He had a 100% approval rating. How quickly things change. He resigned, saying:

I want to make it clear that my decision to resign is in no way an admission that I had an affair or affairs. My offense was engaging in inappropriate story-telling and I regret my language and choice of words.

  1. Uh…I misspoke…I need to spend more time with the family…….I was hiking.

Based on previous experience, though disgraced this pillar of the community will find some other outlet to remain in the public’s eye. Perhaps he could go on “Dancing with the Stars”, or maybe get his own show on Fox (a la Ollie North).

  2. You can be sure that Jesus has already forgiven him by now, so it’s okay. And besides, he was just making up a dirty story. It didn’t really happen.

Oh, and did I tell you about my alien abduction? It was just about three….

  3. My wife’s father is getting married for the fourth time this Thanksgiving. Since I’ve known him, he’s been engaged four times, and married twice.

He’s a super conservative Christian, and an obnoxious Neo-Con. He was also huge supporter of Prop. 8 here in California, cawing incessantly about the “sanctity of marriage.”

The other day on the phone, in the middle of a heated debate about gay rights, my wife pointed out to him that heterosexuals like himself had done far more to undermine the sanctity of marriage than homosexuals ever could.

He responded, “Oh, are you talking about my first wife? I only married her so I could make your future mother jealous.”

    Exactly.

    • Dude! Your wife’s father sounds like ginormous douchebag (a douchebag for Jesus!); I’m sure he makes holidays fun. Did your wife point out to him his particular violations of Jesus’ strictures against divorce? And what about Paul’s comments about marriage? What kind of mental gymnastics does he perform to justify his two marriages? From what you wrote, he hardly sounds repentant about the first marriage–indeed, his comments are rather flip for such a super conservative and I doubt those comments make the baby Jesus smile.

  4. Maybe he thought he could get away with it because the Rapture was supposed to occur earlier this week.

  5. I don’t understand why people turn a blind eye to such hypocrisy? It seems like a broken record – a story that happens over and over again, yet no one pays attention. Not the conservatives / christians / republicans anyway.

  6. >I want to make it clear that my decision to resign is in no way an admission that I had an affair or affairs.<

On the other hand, he didn't deny an affair.

"My offense was engaging in inappropriate story-telling and I regret my language and choice of words."

I'm sure he does, and I'm sure he was bragging. But he still didn't deny an affair.

  7. ‘ I regret my language and choice of words.’

‘All those words I wrote in Mein Kampf were the wrong words – I had intended to construct a sequence of words that described Ethel the Aardvark going Quantity Surveying’. (c) Adolph Hitler

  8. It’s got to the status of a law of nature by now: if it looks like a conservative, and if it croaks about family values, then it’s a liar who is cheating. Always. There are no exceptions.

  9. Nothing wrong with robbing the cradle. Hal “Late Great Planet Earth” Lindsey is on wife #4, she is 30 years younger than Hal
I also like the story of old King David, who under god’s order, shared his bed with the most beautiful virgin in his kingdom. Maybe the is what is keeping Pat Roberson alive.

    • That was the admirable part of King David’s story. After lusting for a hottie, the king dispatched her husband on a suicide mission, for which Samuel the Prophet rebuked the king and really bummed him out.

  10. Isn’t it typical that, having shared a laugh and a joke about how much he’s dipping his wick in forbidden wax, he’s chosen to cover it up by outright lying about it. And he hasn’t even admitted lying – he’s said it was “innapropriate story telling”! He was either lying then (which he clearly wasn’t, imho) or he’s lying now (yeah, he very obviously is), but either way he’s a great big liar!

  11. “Family Values” California state assemblyman representing Orange County, Republican Michael D. Duvall, resigns for apparently not cheating on his wife with a lobbyist or two. Well you have to take his word for it, or maybe believe that hypocrisy has been bred in. In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away rights of those they just hate) and that’s who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, “We Ain’t Coming Out”. He is just another name that can be added to the list of “Republican 2009 Summer of Love”: Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), SC Board of Ed Chair, Kristin Maguire (AKA Bridget Keeney). But let’s get back to the real problem of political corruption, does anyone think this will get investigated and that things he voted on will need to be affirmed by the remaining members or will nothing happen? Do I hear Tammy Wynette, “Stand By Your Man” playing in the background? I remember not so long ago that other Orange County song favorite, “Stand By Your Tan” (for Tan Nguyen). But that’s another Orange County fool.

  12. What I find most amusing with these “Christians” is that Jesus Christ very easily forgave people for sex sins. He just told them to stop sinning. The people he REALLY railed against were the rich folk (the old “a camel can pass through the eye of a needle easier than a rich man can get into heaven” stuff). But all these conservative “Christians” (they really DON’T follow Christ’s teachings) are all hung up on sex sins. I frankly don’t care, but when they become so judgemental about others’ sex antics but engage in whatever they want, it just SLAYS me.

  13. “many of which are too nasty to reprint here” You teaser! After all, it was only inappropriate story-telling. I wonder if his next job will be writing articles for Playboy?
