I can’t believe Brit Hume is still allowed on TV.
It’s funny though, how his determination of what religion Tiger should follow is based on its ‘redemptive stats,’ not on which one is true.
Then again, he probably wanted to say “Buddhism is horseshit,” but even Fox News wouldn’t allow that kind of insanity.
I’m so glad The Daily Show is back on.
so am I! The holidays were sure missing something without my DS and Colbert fix
Agreed! But Hulu was down last night so I couldn’t catch up =(
Seems Hume’s argument is two-fold:
1) Christianity offers the best chance of redemption/forgiveness
2) Turning Christian makes you a great example to the world
I can at least see the rationale for stating 1, but 2 is a non sequitur. Converting to Christianity doesn’t in itself make you a great example of morality.
When he say example he actually mean marketing opportunity to jesus Inc. that can generate a ton of tax free cash.
I think Hume is actually technically correct, from a World Religions standpoint (even though that wasn’t his intent). To my knowledge, Buddhism doesn’t contain the concept of divine forgiveness and redemption.
Yes. But I don’t think it needs it.
Christianity invented original sin, and the ostensible solution — divine redemption. Sickness and cure. It’s part of their game.
As a friend of mine always says, “don’t listen to anyone who says you’ve got a problem you didn’t know you had.”
I’ve had that conversation with someone before. Christianity is like one of those viruses who’s pop up window informs you about a virus on your computer and if you buy their software it will get rid of the virus that it installed in the first place.
Gee thanks pop up christianity!
Reminds me of the pharma companies….
… and that makes all the difference exactly how. I could say that Buddhism is the only religion that contains two d’s a u and and an m … should Tiger “shagger” Woods therefore not convert?
Dear Tiger,
I know this must be a hard time in your life, which is why I suggest you convert to Christianity. It’s the only religion that can be anagrammed to both “Chains, I try it!” and “Cyan Irish tit.”
Sincerely,
Brit Hume
Why would Tiger need forgiveness and redemption?
Is it wrong for Buddhism to have multiple partners?
Monogamy is an invention by the church to keep as much land and wealth as possible so it does not get spread by divorce.
Is it wrong [in] Buddhism to have multiple partners?
Yes. They do teach about sexual morality and a lot of it is pretty straight-laced uptight stuff, but their point is only that multiple partners and the like further distances the amorous from permanent contentment, not that they have broken some arcane rule and will therefore burn.
I was watching Fox News Sunday when Hume said that. I seriously couldn’t believe it. Even Kristol (and the other panelists) thought he was nuts. I’ve been following the story now because I was hoping it would blow up so people were aware of his bigoted statements. I found the Daily Show vid last night and posted it on my FB too, funny as hell…and yes, ‘hell’ to me is very funny. :)
I’m thinking that that look on Bills face might have had something to do with the fact that he’s JEWISH … as a people they’ve had more than their share of Xian proselyting.
No no, Christianity is the religion for pastors who snort meth off the asses of male hookers. Not cheating golfers.
Get it straight, guys.
ROTFL!
Awesome, Ty!
Or get it gay. Whichever floats your holiness’ boat…
Well, buddhism to my knowledge doesn’t have a “divine” in the first place – as Elliot said, you don’t need redemption because you don’t have a concept of sin to be forgiven for. So it’s kind of right, but for utterly different reasons.
Anybody been able to find a link for this video that works outside of the US? Failing that, anybody able to repost it to YouTube?
because of copywrite issues, Daily Show can’t be put on YouTube anymore….
wish I had a better answer for you. Sorry
If you have Freeview, the Daily Show is available. Sadly the Colbert Report is not…
The Colbert Report is freely avaliable. Not the complete episodes, but you can watch it all in segments.
You should be able to get The Daily Show on 4od, at least the last week’s worth.
That site is a pain to navigate so persevere.
In Canada they have the full episodes for the past couple of weeks on comedycentral.com; I don’t know if they’re available in other countries, though.
You can usually watch all of them on http://www.hulu.com – entire episodes.
Hulu doesn’t stream outside of the US. Not to the UK, anyway.
Try Sidereel.com, and hope your firewall is up to the task of saving your computer from being utterly pwned.
I connect via a university straight onto the backbone. Plus I’m freakishly paranoid about net security :-)
Not true about copyright issues and Daily Show. You can catch the clip here: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/religion/index
Here’s the link: http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:260615
Thanks, but I’m getting the same message here too.
I don’t get it, Why is Tiger being so criticised. 50% of the people are unfaithful.
But..but…he hits a ball for a living! Therefore, he is a “role model”! And we are all a bunch of pearl-clutching, idiotic Americans who get totally flummoxed at the mere mention of sex. And adultery–especially adultery by sports figures–just sends us into apoplexy.
Don’t come to Europe, the Playboy magazine is viewable through the front window of the shops and we have plenty of nudity on commercials that even children see. LOL
I never understood the hide the sex and alcohol thing.
Jealousy?
What Brit Hume said was stupid and uninformed. I am not making excuses for Brit’s statement, but Brit’s son Sandy committed suicide in 1998. Maybe the support Brit got from his faith community got him through that trauma. Maybe Brit felt in some way he was to blame for his son’s death and in religion he was able to forgive himself.
It is one reason why some people don’t leave religion; it gives them a support network. I sometimes wonder if the church I attendant as a teen treated me better, or if I wasn’t sick from the age of 19 thru 30, I still might be a Christian today.
As for Bill Kristol, he and other conservative Jews have no problem taking advantage of Christian Zionists (and most American Christian Conservatives support Zionism) to get massive amount of taxpayer’s dollars and charitable money to Israel. His magazine panders to the Christian religious right, so he shouldn’t be surprised when it bites him in the ass.
This event also reminds me of Tom Cruise denouncing Brook Shields for taking anti-depressants and not using Scientology instead. Tom Cruise is another religious zealot. But at least he apologized.
You’re welcome :)
What can I say? I like Jon
