Cartoonist Attacked With Axe For Muhammad Drawings

It’s hard to believe there are people in the world who want to kill people over a cartoon:

Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked an international row.

Mr Westergaard scrambled into a panic room at his home in Aarhus after a man wielding an axe and a knife broke in.

Danish officials said the intruder was a 28-year-old Somali, who they did not name, but said was linked to the radical Islamist al-Shabab militia. [...]

His house has been heavily fortified and is under close police protection.

Police said the man had entered Mr Westergaard’s house armed with a knife and axe and had shouted in broken English that he wanted to kill him.

Mr Westergaard ran to a specially designed panic room where he raised the alarm. [...]

Islamic militants have placed a $1m price on Mr Westergaard’s head.

Remember, “Islam” means “peace”! At least that is what some defenders say, which is not true.

Islam actually means “submission”… which is quite scary since many submit to a literal interpretation of their holy book.

  1. In America you have “fundamentalist” Christianity, and in Europe we have “radical” Islam. Both of them demand absolute submission, both demand that even people who don’t believe in them should follow their rules, and both will willingly murder non-believers who don’t abide by their rules. This, if anything, is more sinister than pro-life lifers murdering doctors, though – they at least have the excuse (poor though it is in their case) of trying to save what they consider to be human lives. But to try to murder a non-Muslim cartoonist because the Qu’ran says you can’t draw pictures of Mohammed? I hope this informs my islamophobia.

  2. Murder is always justified by religious literalists from many religions. Murder is okay if your god tells you to in a primitive book. But you have to wonder why an all-powerful deity needs little humans to do his dirty work.

  3. I’m actually looking forward to the justifications/explanations for this from the pro-Islamic lobby, look forrward to blanket statements like “This isn’t Islam” or “This was a sporadic incident” or “The Danish person deserved it”.

    • Actually some Islamic group rejected the attack

“Overkoepelende moslimorganisatie veroordeelt aanslag op cartoonist”

  4. …literal interpretation of their holy book.

Perhaps that was a typo. Since there is no divine power, the book isn’t holy. It’s just a book, regardless of what they may think.

Funny how the teachings are so vague that so many people misinterpret the teachings of ‘peace’ to mean ‘go blow that guy’s shit up’. Religion of peace indeed. I guess the same goes for the rest of them.

    • Not a typo. It’s their “holy book” — doesn’t mean it is actually holy or inspired.

      • I interpreted that as “holey”, so… yeah, it’s a “holey” book.

      • I was just being facetious, I know what you meant :)

@WMDKitty – That’s quite funny, holey book. I had a holey shirt once.

        • I had a holey shirt once.

My cat made me one the other day. I was…displeased with the offering.

          • Did you smite him/her?

            • No. I would make a very poor deity; I merely chastised it verbally (and thus extremely ineffectively), and then petted its head. In point-of-fact, the cat making the shirt holey may have simply been part of an overall unspoken message to the effect of “don’t leave your shirts in the living room”, which clearly means that she is in cahoots with the S.O., and so I am hopelessly outmatched anyway.

              • It’s difficult to be a good deity when dealing with cats.
“Fluffy- is that a guilt offering or a sin offering? It’s important to know the difference. No, no. Don’t just leave it half alive flailing and hopping all over the kitchen floor! You’re supposed to remove the breast, WAVE it in front of the alter, then burn the offal and fat. Come to think of it, I don’t remember any mention of frogs as pleasing sacrifice.”

              • Ah, but cats ARE gods! You are here to serve US. You open cans & doors (and stuff) for us, you pet us, you shelter us, just like a good minion should. Now bow down before your fuzzy masters!

  5. Cartoons of Muhammad are drawn every day. Why this particular cartoonist deserves to die for it? I’m always amazed at how fundamentalists choose the subjects of their outrage, it’s a lot like how some artists toil in obscurity for years while inferior competitors become famous.

The “I hate danes” islamists really have good communications people.

  6. These guys really know how to hold a grudge!

  7. For a second there I thought it read “Muhammad Attacked with Cartoon Axe”

  8. $1 million?!!! dude I´ll kill myself for that! (in case the FBI or Interpol is monitoring this site, that was a joke. but really I would… maybe).

  9. MURDERER (Low, from Drums and Guns)

One more thing before I go,
one more thing I’ll ask you, Lord:
    you may need a murderer,
someone to do your dirty work.

    Don’t act so innocent:
I’ve seen you pound your fist into the earth,
    and I’ve read your books–
it seems that you could use another fool–
    well, I’m cruel
    and I look right through…

You must have more important things to do,
so if you need a murderer,
someone to do your dirty work…

  10. @myself i meant kill him myself. Of course i wouldn´t… would i?

  11. My young lady makes an interesting point about this: Perhaps some European Muslims are such children when it comes to getting their own way because they’re generally migrants from countries which have sharia law – so they’re used to their holy book being the be-all and end-all, and they’re not prepared for countries with laws which, what’s the term, aren’t barbaric.

Given the amount of power that fundie Christians have traditionally held in the US, perhaps that translates across – they’re spitting out their dummies and screaming because they’re afraid that their toys are about to be taken away.

    /thread derail.

  12. could we change the meaning of christianity to also mean submission?
